Manali has been the default Himachal holiday for so long that people arrive with low expectations and stay on Mall Road. The interesting version of the trip starts about twenty kilometres north of it.
Best time to visit
March to June for green valleys and comfortable days, and September to November for the clearest views of the year. December to February brings snow — Solang and Sissu are genuinely beautiful, though the higher roads close at short notice and chains are sometimes required. Late July and August are the monsoon, and the Mandi–Manali stretch has a long history of landslides in that window; if you go, build slack into the schedule.
Getting there
Around 530 km from Delhi via Chandigarh, Bilaspur and Mandi — twelve to thirteen hours, usually run overnight so the group arrives for breakfast. The four-lane sections between Kiratpur and Nerchowk have cut a meaningful amount off the old timing. Bhuntar airport is 50 km south with limited flights; Chandigarh is the more reliable air gateway.
A four-day shape
Day one: arrive, rest, and spend the afternoon on Hadimba temple, Old Manali and the Manu temple. Day two: Solang valley in the morning, then the Atal Tunnel through to Sissu and Koksar for the afternoon. Day three: Naggar castle, the Roerich gallery and a slow drive down the left bank of the Beas, or the full day out to Kasol and Manikaran. Day four: Vashisht hot springs and Jogini falls before the drive back.
What to see
- Hadimba Devi temple in its cedar grove, best before ten in the morning
- Solang valley for paragliding and, in winter, the snow slopes
- The Atal Tunnel — 9.02 km under the Rohtang massif — and Sissu lake and waterfall on the far side
- Naggar castle and the Nicholas Roerich estate above it
- Vashisht hot springs and the two-hour Jogini falls walk
- Kasol and the Manikaran gurudwara, 75 km down and back up the Parvati valley
Rohtang, separately
Rohtang Pass itself still needs an online permit, issued in limited daily numbers and not available on the pass's weekly maintenance closure day. Since the tunnel opened, most groups skip it — Sissu gives you Lahaul without the permit lottery.
Where a tempo traveller helps
The Solang and tunnel roads are steep, and in season the queue of vehicles at the tunnel's south portal is long. A hill-experienced driver in a 12 or 16 seater is worth more here than any other single booking decision — the vehicle handles the gradient, the group stays together through a day with several short stops, and nobody is negotiating with a local taxi at the Sissu turnoff in the cold. Raahi Vacation runs the Delhi–Manali overnight most weekends through the season with drivers who know where the road narrows past Kullu.
Rough budget
- Vehicle: ₹30,000 to ₹38,000 for a four-day Delhi round trip in a 12 seater, driver allowance included
- Stay: ₹1,800 for a clean Old Manali guesthouse, ₹6,000 upwards for a riverside resort
- Paragliding at Solang: ₹1,500 to ₹3,500 depending on the flight length
- Food: ₹600 to ₹1,100 per person per day
Do the tunnel day early in the trip. If the weather closes it, you still have days left to try again.
